We were commissioned to create a website showcasing contemporary Middle Eastern and African perspectives on Malcolm X, along with regional press coverage, fotos etc. The goal was to build a visually engaging system for presenting information that is both educational and accessible. The name “X180” reflects the idea of turning eastward to encounter a different, often overlooked portrait of the revolutionary instead of the dominant american view.

// Visualizing Information

The platform needed to present several layers of information: a general life timeline of Malcolm X to give viewers context and highlight key events, and a parallel timeline of press articles published during the same periods across the Middle East and Africa. These articles can be filtered by date, language, and keywords, allowing users to explore specific themes or moments in depth.

We chose a visual system that first confronts the user with the sheer volume of perspectives from the East — viewpoints that are largely unfamiliar in the West. Each article is represented as a dot on an expansive timeline, creating a dense, growing constellation that immediately communicates the richness and scale of this discourse.

Version 2:
In this first prototype, the main challenge lies in language accessibility. Many of the press articles are preserved as original scans, making it difficult for the system to accurately interpret and translate the content, whether in French or various Arabic scripts. Developing a reliable translation flow into English — to balance the largely Western narrative of Malcolm X — will be a key focus for Version 2.
