As a counsellor and therapist, David Sutherland is treating some of the most complicated and delicate issues: of adult survivors of childhood abuse, physical, psychological or sexual. Knowing how vital it is to create the right setting for healing, I tried to create a sense of ‘space’ for him to present himself, stepping as respectfully as I can to create a warm and calm feeling, where nothing is too overbearing and above all balanced and ordered.

STATIONARY
I wanted to create a calming and ordered impression using minimal elements with an organic & human feel. I was contemplating how to visually represent change or movement, or ideas of an axis of loss to growth, or chaos to order. I also played with contour lines from topographic maps – ways of understanding a terrain to gain insight. By the end all proposals, including the idea chosen by the client, involved patterns with unordered elements falling into place again over time.

This quote features prominently on the home and it influenced the choice of all background images; suggesting soft edges between light & shadow, inside & outside etc. The looping background video on the Home itself is of soft, rolling waves coming to shore.
